Joule vs calorie vs kWh — which energy unit wins?
Why your electric bill uses kWh, your food label uses kcal, and your physics class uses joules.
Three families of energy units dominate ordinary life, and they all measure the same thing:
- Joules (J) — the SI unit. 1 J = 1 N·m. Used in physics, chemistry, electricity. - Calories (cal) — the energy to heat 1 g of water by 1 °C. Used on food labels (where it's labelled "Calorie" but actually kilocalorie, kcal). - Kilowatt-hours (kWh) — the energy of 1 kW sustained for 1 hour. Used on electricity bills.
Conversions:
- 1 cal = 4.184 J - 1 kcal = 4,184 J (or 4.184 kJ) - 1 kWh = 3.6 × 10⁶ J = 3.6 MJ - 1 BTU (British Thermal Unit) ≈ 1,055 J
The food calorie makes sense historically: a calorimeter literally measured how much heat food released when burned. The joule makes sense because energy and work are the same thing in physics. The kWh makes sense because electricity is sold as power × time.
If you're comparing foods across regions, a US label reads "250 kcal" and a European one reads "1,046 kJ". Same number, different unit — same energy. The site lets you pick any combination.
